Space Maintainers
Holding the Space for a Healthy Smile
When a baby tooth comes out too early, it can leave a gap that causes problems later. A space maintainer is a simple device that holds that spot open, so your child’s permanent teeth have room to come in exactly where they should.
What it is
A space maintainer is a small, custom appliance that keeps the gap from an early-lost tooth open until the permanent tooth is ready to emerge. It’s comfortable, low-maintenance, and works quietly in the background to protect your child’s developing smile.
Why your child might need one
Baby teeth naturally hold space for the permanent teeth behind them. If one is lost early, from decay, injury, or extraction, the surrounding teeth can drift into the gap. That can lead to crowding and alignment issues that are harder (and pricier) to fix later. A space maintainer prevents that from happening.
What to expect
We’ll fit your child with a maintainer made just for their mouth, and check it at routine visits to make sure everything’s on track. Most kids adjust to it quickly and barely notice it’s there. We’ll show you how to keep it clean and what to watch for at home.
