Nitrous Oxide / Oxygen

A Little Help Relaxing, So Your Child Can Stay Calm

Some kids breeze through dental visits. Others need a little extra help feeling calm, and that’s completely okay. For those moments, we offer nitrous oxide, often called laughing gas, a safe and gentle way to help your child relax and feel comfortable in the chair.

What it is

Nitrous oxide is a mild, calming gas your child breathes in through a small nose mask. It takes the edge off any nervousness while keeping your child fully awake and aware the whole time. It’s safe, it’s effective, and it’s been trusted in pediatric dentistry for decades.

Why your child might benefit

Nitrous oxide can be a great fit if your child feels anxious or fearful about treatment, has trouble sitting still for longer procedures, or simply does better with a little help staying relaxed. It’s one of the gentlest tools we have for turning a stressful visit into an easy one.

What to expect

It’s simple and stress-free. Your child wears a small mask over their nose and breathes normally. Within minutes, they’ll start to feel calm and at ease. They stay awake and keep all their natural reflexes the entire time. When the appointment is over, your child breathes regular oxygen for a few minutes and the effects wear off completely. No lingering grogginess, no recovery time. Most kids are right back to themselves before you even leave the office. A couple of quick notes: let us know ahead of time if your child has any condition that makes breathing through their nose difficult, like congestion, since that can affect how well nitrous works. And as your child grows more comfortable with dental visits over time, they may not need it at all.
