Silver Diamine Fluoride (SDF)
Stop Cavities Without the Drill
Silver diamine fluoride, or SDF, is one of the gentlest tools we have for treating cavities in children. With a quick, painless brush-on application, it halts decay in its tracks, no drilling, no needles, no stress. For the right child, it can make cavity treatment about as easy as it gets.
What it is
SDF is a topical liquid we apply directly to a cavity to stop it from growing. It does two jobs at once: the silver works to clear out the bacteria causing the decay, while the fluoride helps rebuild and strengthen the affected part of the tooth. It can also calm tooth sensitivity and protect a tooth that’s already close to falling out naturally. Think of it as hitting pause on a cavity, no procedure required.
Why your child might benefit
SDF is an especially good fit for little ones who have a hard time sitting still for traditional treatment. That includes children with dental anxiety or special needs, kids dealing with several cavities at once, or those at higher risk for tooth decay. Because it’s so much less invasive than drilling, it lets us treat the problem while keeping your child calm and comfortable.
It can also help with sensitive teeth. When the protective enamel wears down and the layer beneath it (the dentin) is exposed, hot, cold, and certain foods can trigger discomfort. SDF forms a protective barrier over those exposed areas, helping ease the sensitivity. In fact, the FDA has cleared it specifically as a tooth-desensitizing treatment.

What to expect
It couldn’t be simpler. We clean the area, brush on the SDF, and that’s it, often in just a few minutes, with no numbing and no discomfort at all.
One thing worth knowing ahead of time: SDF darkens the treated spot on the tooth, which is actually how you can tell it’s doing its job. The healthy parts of the tooth stay their natural color, only the decayed area turns darker. If the discoloration is a concern, especially on a tooth that shows when your child smiles, we can talk through options like a tooth-colored filling or crown to cover it.
